New visitor center opens for Portland, Published in the DJC

In an article published 8/8 in the DJC, the firm’s design for the new Travel Portland Visitor Center is featured. The article discusses how the motif for the travel center centers around three concepts: “Inspire, Explore, and Connect.” The aesthetic applied by LRS utilizes natural materials to connect the man-made structure to Portland’s biosphere.

“LRS’s design incorporates elements of biophilia using natural materials to show how people and their natural surroundings can coexist peaceably,” the article notes. “The design incorporates Douglas Fir wood and other natural materials from around the Pacific Northwest — giving the building a local feel that reflects the beauty and abundance of the region’s natural resources.”

Inside, visitors will interact with maps and brochures highlighting must-visit sites around Portland and the entire state of Oregon. The furniture chosen for the travel center is meant to foster an atmosphere of inclusion and accessibility for all visitors.

“The architecture establishes a welcoming, curated experience for visitors as they move through the center, encouraging exploration and connection,” the article said.
