The Subaru dealership in Wilsonville, Oregon is the largest Subaru in North America. It features a two-story showroom, as well as offices, service center and reception, and a cozy customer café. Placing each of these facilities under a continuous roof gave the team the opportunity to imaginatively organize and design the space.
Located in the heart of Wilsonville’s Old Town, the Wilsonville Subaru presented a unique challenge to the design team: how to blend the brand guidelines of the manufacturer with the design requirements of the neighborhood? The Wilsonville Old Town design guidelines stipulated design that reflected the architectural styles of the Willamette Valley from 1880 to 1930. The resulting building—a modernist interpretation of the styles—was approved following considerable dialogue with the city and neighbors.
The expansive glazing along the length of the building creates prominent visibility for passing motorists. The long façades are broken up into a series of smaller “store fronts” to reflect the area’s history, while the canopies and benches provide pedestrian amenities required by the Wilsonville Old Town design guidelines. Stone detailing contrasts with the white concrete façade, creating an inviting aesthetic for customers.
