Located on the Deschutes River, two mixed-use commercial buildings have emerged as iconic figures in downtown Bend. Each building, having their own look, measures over 6,000 SF and two stories tall. The east building (65 Newport), facing the downtown streets has a more traditional design, whereas the west building (69 Newport), along the river, illustrates a more mountain-modern feel.
Developing on the site proved to be challenging due to the location by the river, easements and zoning restrictions, as well as the adjoining brewpub next door. The property merged from two sites: the eastside, which sat on a vacant lot; and the westside, which was a former residence.
Each building features exposed beams and trusses with restaurant amenities on the first floors and basement and office spaces on the second floors. The west building offices include roll-up garage doors on the second floor – the first in Bend – to bring the outdoors closer in.
Straddled between the buildings on the exposed wall of the adjoining brewpub, and spanning the 18-space parking lot, stands a large mural by a local artist.
